Find Out If Your Countertops Need Resealing In 1 Easy Step | The Countertop Wizard

Granite Sealer for countertops can help protect against damage. Find out if your countertops need resealing, how resealing can help protect your countertops, and how often to reseal them.

Most natural stones are porous and liquids can easily impregnate these materials. Upon new installation of your stone countertops, a sealer is usually added and can last up to 15 years. If you purchased a home with countertops already installed, you may not know how long ago the sealer was added, or you may be wondering if the countertops need resealing. Fortunately, The Countertop Wizard has a way you can check in 1 easy step!

The Water Test

Splash a handful of water onto the countertop. Wait 5 minutes. If it beads up, your countertops are properly sealed. If the stone absorbed the water after 5 minutes, it’s time to reseal your stone countertop.

Why Reseal Countertops?

Although there isn’t a sealer that will guarantee stain prevention, adding sealer to a countertop does help prevent moisture absorption. When the sealer is applied, it impregnates the stone, cures, and forms a protective barrier. This barrier helps protect against stains, scratches, and dullness, but keep in mind, the sealer won't necessarily make the countertops shine.

If the shine is what you’re looking for, you’ll want to inquire about polishing the stone.

What will the sealer help protect against?

A sealed countertop will help protect against food and water stains. It is important to wipe up any spills or messes as quickly as possible and follow a regular cleaning schedule to keep your countertops in the best condition possible.

TCW TIP: Lighter-colored materials tend to absorb dense liquids, like cooking oil, easily. If your countertops are lighter in color, be sure to wipe up spills ASAP!

Which countertops have to be resealed?

All natural stones, like granite, marble, and quartzite, are porous and should be sealed to ward against staining. Quartz, however, is a manufactured material and does not require sealing because it’s non-porous

How often should you reseal countertops?

The Countertop Wizard suggests only resealing countertops if they failed the water test. If you tried this method, and the water did not bead up on the countertop but instead absorbed into the materials, call us - we can help with your granite countertop sealer, marble countertop sealer, and quartzite countertop sealer.
