The 4 Ks of Chip Prevention
Chip happens. It’s a fact of life. The tips below will outline steps you can take to help protect your investment and reduce chips.
Know about your material
Natural stones, like granite and quartz, will not chip as easily as soft materials like wood or laminate. Although granite and quartz are more durable than their lower-cost counterparts, there can still be weak points, and when the countertops experience a force in those areas, it could cause a chip or a crack.
It’s important to note where the weak areas are on your countertops. If you have an under mount sink, the area around the sink is most likely to be chipped or damaged. It’s especially important to take care when washing heavy pots or pans.
TCW TIP: Place a kitchen towel along the edge of your sink when washing pots and pans. It could help prevent chips or damage. Use that same dish towel to dry any excess water that may have accumulated around the faucet to keep your granite in good condition.
2. Keep it sealed
A sealer can help provide a protective barrier on the stone. Sealers prevent water absorption into the stone, which can prevent liquid absorption that would lead to staining. For a cheat sheet on which stones need sealing, check out HGTV’s recommendation. Use the water test to find out if your countertops need resealing.
3. Keep it Clean
A routine cleaning schedule will remove any loose items that could lead to etching, scratching or staining. Remember to remove items that are regularly placed on your countertops to clean under them.
4. Keep it protected
Take caution to keep your countertops protected. Although granite and quartz are durable materials, minimize the potential for chips by treating them delicately.
Use a protective barrier, like a trivet, under hot pans or pots
Avoid sliding cooking equipment across the countertop
Always use a cutting board
keep your countertops dry
